Recap: Direct Hit! record release show at Double Door

Phil Collins - July 6, 2016

Direct Hit!

Direct Hit! at Double Door on Friday

Direct Hit! played the last of their three record release shows for Wasted Mind at Double Door on Friday. They played many of the songs from their new album, released on Fat Wreck Chords a week earlier. They opened with the lead single, "Paid In Brains." They had a couple horn players on stage for that song's performance. "Was It The Acid?," "Do The Sick," "Promised Land" and "Hospital For Heroes" also made the setlist, along with songs from Brainless God and earlier releases. The crowd moved around plenty for the brand new songs.

I was lucky enough to snag the last copy of an exclusive white splatter vinyl variant, which was only available at the three record release shows (thanks, Steve O.) Pipeworks had a special draft for the show called Unicorn Puke. It was super sweet, which I imagine unicorn puke would be as well. Eradicator opened the show with songs from their self-titled 10-inch. The songs are all based on a sketch from The Kids in the Hall. Eradicator will be back in town on July 31 at Quenchers with Devon Kay & The Solutions, Jacob Horn Trio and The Burst & Bloom.

Lipstick Homicide

Lipstick Homicide at Double Door on Friday

Lipstick Homicide totally fit the Red Scare Industries sound, which is the label Direct Hit! put out their previous album on. The Iowa City based pop punk trio last released Out Utero in 2013. That record made this blog's top eight in our albums of the year bracket. Direct Hit's Brainless God was overlooked on that same bracket. It was one of those records that I did not really become aware of until the following year. I have a feeling Wasted Mind will not suffer the same fate.
