It’ll Get Worse Before It Gets Better

Atomic Action Records, 2014

Fucking Invincible. The name conjures forth an intensity and strength that cannot easily be matched. And so it is with Providence’s Fucking Invincible. Featuring members of Dropdead and Daughters, this is furious grinding powerviolence at a breakneck pace. It’ll Get Worse Before It Gets Better is the debut full length from Fucking Invincible, though flying through fourteen songs in fourteen minutes it barely qualifies as a full length record. That didn’t stop me from giving them a spot on 2014’s bracket, where they, perhaps not surprisingly, didn’t do too well. It’s angry and uncomfortable, an attribute that Fucking Invincible have on all their records. Just look at the title, or of their newest seven inch: I Hate Myself and Want You To Die. There is no happiness, no peace, no calm here. Just rage and vitriol, and a violent, intimidating, brutal grindcore.

Starting with feedback and quickly turning into a wall of noise, album opener “Not What You Are” sets the stage, in 59 seconds, for the rest of the record. Incredibly fast, incredibly heavy, harsh, screaming vocals that rarely let up. And those vocals yell lines like “I envision our end: X’s for eyes and holes in our heads. / Sometimes we get what we ask for, sometimes we get nothing. / I envision our end and we don’t come back from the dead.” from “Dead Dogs.” And then there’s “Ape as Man/Man as Ape:” “Leaning on a crooked crutch, wearing a grin of shit. / How do they not make themselves fucking sick? / Dear America; please slit your own throat. / Dear America; get fucked. / Come glorious end. Bring fire and death.” Yeah, there’s no sunshine or flowers, or unicorns here. Just fire, death, destruction, and powerviolence.

     Fucking Invincible

I was introduced to Fucking Invincible back in 2013 when they played in Albany. After the Fall organized the show and played all of their heavy songs on a night full of heavy hardcore, grind, and powerviolence. Fucking Invincible also played that show, and while they weren’t the headliner, they were definitely the most impressive band of the night. Their live shows are an event of merciless and ruthless powerviolence. They blast through their set, taking no breaks between songs, to either take a breather or interact with the crowd. Just pedal to the floor, furiously flying through their set, which might not even stretch a half hour in length. If you have the chance to see them live, I highly recommend it.
