New Track Roundup: The Kreutzer Sonata, The Union Boys, Melomaniac, MUTTS, Big Eyes

Phil Collins - August 10, 2016

The Kreutzer Sonata/The Union Boys split preview

Chicago hardcore group The Kreutzer Sonata and Boston's The Union Boys each released a song from their upcoming split 7-inch. The Kreutzer Sonata's "White Knuckles" brings fast, relentless hardcore vocals and skate punk style guitar. The Union Boys' "This Time" reminds me of old school Dropkick Murphys. The 7-inch is coming soon from Don't Panic Records and Distro and S.B.S. Records. 200 copies will be on black vinyl and 100 copies will be on trasparent orange vinyl. Stream both songs below.

Melomaniac release two songs from an upcoming EP

Chicago horror punk/psychobilly trio Melomaniac released two songs from an upcoming EP. The songs are noted as a single and a B-side on their bandcamp page. "Riding the Bullet" features some of the band's signature guitar shredding and haunted vocals. "The Devil of Bedford Street" rides more mid-tempo with a catchy chorus and wandering bassline. Stream the tracks below and catch Melomaniac live at Brauer House in Lombard on August 18.

Mutts release new single with Archie Powell on vocals

This is a pretty poppy turn for Chicago's Mutts, who often lean toward piano-led, Tom Waits-y jams. Archie Powell of fellow local band Archie Powell and The Exports takes vocals on the track. Combined with the guitar licks and backup vocals, this song is an anthem for fans of the Black Keys. This appears to be a one-off single for now. Mutts last released the Ghoul Yer Delusion EP in October. Stream "Let's Go" below.

Big Eyes release a video from upcoming album

New York punk/rock and roll group Big Eyes released a video for the title track from their upcoming third album, Stake My Claim. This band has a knack for writing memorable tunes. If you don't know Big Eyes, it's time to start listening. You might remember frontwoman Kait Eldridge from the band Cheeky, who had an EP on Quote Unquote Records way back when. Stake My Claim comes out on Don Giovanni Records on August 19. Big Eyes play at the Empty Bottle the night before. Watch the video for "Stake My Claim" below.
