New track roundup: Butchered, UGLYBoNES, Poison Boys, Kali Masi

Phil Collins - March 18, 2021

Through the haze of social media algorithms, it's easy to lose songs that you meant to check out later. By the time later comes around, you're there scratching your head trying to remember who posted a new video or song or update 2 or 12 days ago ... it must have been the Mighty Mighty Bosstones. I actually love ska and they do have a new song out but that's beside the point. Without further ado, a roundup of some new songs released by Chicago area punk bands in the last 2 or 12 days!

Butchered - "Born to Run with Scissors"

This is a recently-released video for a song off Butchered's album Wax Pathetic, which came out last November. The album was on Change the Rotation's album of the year bracket, where it did lose to a ska album but hey, making it into the field of 32 means we liked that album a hell of a lot. It's catchy pop punk with a good sense of humor. Check out the album at Bandcamp and watch the video below.

UGLYBoNES - "Cheetah"

Hardcore punks UGLYBoNES dropped a surprise new track, right around the one-year mark since any of us have been to a show. The video for "Cheetah" was recorded live in their practice space. As most of their songs do, it makes you want to push and shove and move around while having your ears blasted with shouts and walloping guitars. UGLYBoNES last released Sunshine in 2018 and it seems like there is a new release in the works. Check out Sunshine on Bandcamp and watch the video for "Cheetah" below.

Poison Boys - "Dick in the Dirt"

Garage punkers Poison Boys have released a couple new songs in recent months, the most recent being "Dick in the Dirt". It's a throwback rock and roller with classic rock guitar licks and snotty vocal delivery. It's a fun melodic tune to crack one open to. Poison Boys also released a video for "Nothing But Darkness" featuring footage from a show opening for The Adicts at the House of Blues. Both singles are from the band's upcoming second full-length album. Listen to "Dick in the Dirt" below and watch the video for "Nothing But Darkness" here.

Kali Masi - "Freer"

Kali Masi are among several great local bands doing emo-tinged punk. It may start on the slower side compared to the rest of this list, but "Freer" packs a punch in its own way. The video similarly ramps up as it goes along. I saw Kali Masi at Riot Fest 2 or 12 years ago (I really have no concept of time these days) and they've been on my radar ever since. "Freer" comes from the band's new album [laughs], out March 26th on Take This To Heart Records. The single on Spotify includes a few additional tracks from the album and I have to say "The Stray" really rips. Watch the video for "Freer" below.
